Beth Ditto Tells The Advocate Why She's a Good Bottom

The Advocate caught up with The Gossip's punk princess Beth Ditto before her San Diego concert to talk music, God, and why she’s a good bottom. A couple of excerpts:

On the trials and tribulations of middle school:
“When I was a kid it wasn’t very nice. Having short hair in high school was such a dangerous move — it was such a bold, crazy move. People would say, ‘You’ve got to be gay,’” she says with a surprisingly fast Southern drawl. “I was so beyond it by the time I was in the seventh grade. Being made fun of something I was good at; I was really good at taking it — that’s why I’m a good bottom to this day.”

After an aunt told her to “have a good time on this Earth:”
Because she’s going to hell? “Yes,” says Ditto, without skipping a beat, “I thought that was really cool though because I don’t give a shit about God. I thought that was very kind. I’m glad someone’s looking out for my soul.”

It seems it’s more the God thing than the gay thing that worries some in her largely religious family. “They’re always obsessed with how I don’t believe in God,” she says. “I just don’t believe in God. You don’t believe in Santa. Whatever.”

MANDY MOORE HAS SPERM ON HER FOOT

Okay, okay...I know Mandy Moore isn't the usual type of content featured on EthanSays, but hey...I like her. And I like the fact that she has sperm on her foot.

Featured in the July/August issue of Women’s Health magazine, Mandy opens up on the subject of her marriage to Ryan Adams, and dishes about her recent album, mis-perception in the media, and her unexpected “good girl gone bad” behavior.

Misperceptions of Mandy:
“I understand people have preconceived notions of who I am or what I do. But I do find it bizarre that people find it bizarre that I’ve grown up.”

Mandy's tattoo parlor visit with her band members (and the unexpected tattoo on the arch of her foot):
“We were goofing off, writing a song about babies or something,” she says. “Somehow that evolved into everybody getting inked. (“It’s a baby sperm.”)

MANDY MOORE IS AMANDA LEIGH

I received Mandy Moore's new album, Amanda Leigh, in the mail the other day but haven't really had the chance to listen to it in full...or with my full attention. But, from what I have payed attention to, I can tell you this album is a true work of art. The album was co-written by Moore and Mike Viola, and was recorded using an eclectic collection of vintage equipment, creating what Rolling Stone calls "an update on the sunny sound of 70's California FM Radio."

Influenced by the sounds of Todd Rundgren, Joni Mitchell, CSNY and Nilsson, among others, the collaboration between Moore and Viola is a collection of personal reflections and insights about life and love as you'll discover in songs such as "Nothing Everything," "Song About Home," and "Love To Love Me Back." The video below is for "I Could Break Your Heart Any Day of the Week" - originally a very alt-country sounding demo that quickly took on a new life with the addition of the clavinet (one of those vintage pieces of equipment).

Moore, intent to tour in support of Amanda Leigh (Moore's given name by the way), adds, "I'm connected to these songs and how they came to fruition in a way that I've never been able to articulate before. The entire experience was one that I will undoubtedly replicate."

Amanda Leigh was released today on Storefront Recordings, a new endeavor between Moore's long-time manager, Jon Leshay, and Red Distribution. I totally recommend picking up a copy. So buy it!.

Totally diggin' Mandy Moore's cover of Rihanna's "Umbrella"... very melodic.  Mandy doesn't normally listen to Top 40 tunes, but this happens to be her favorite song of the moment (seems to be many people's fave, as I've heard it mixed and redone in a variety of ways - but this is my fave).
