January 11, 2010 (LOS ANGELES) — Over the past few decades, the Democratic Party has continually courted the support of and accepted large monetary contributions from gay and lesbian constituents. Now top LGBT activists and bloggers are taking a stand against the party. Not only are LGBT leaders calling for more aggressive action on issues important to the community, including the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act and the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” military policy, they have proposed a donor boycott of the Democratic National Committee.
Journalist James Kirchick talks with writers and activists — including AmericaBlog’s John Aravosis, activist and blogger David Mixner, and Democratic strategist Andy Szekeres — about the boycott, which leaders have labeled “Don’t Ask, Don’t Give.” Further, Kirchick delves into the specific areas where the Democratic Party has failed the LGBT community — a community that until recently has been steadfast in its support for the party.
Some gay Democratic leaders, however, stand behind the Obama administration and point to the progress it has made. Andrew Tobias, the gay man who is DNC treasurer, for example, touts the administration’s “nicely growing list” of pro-gay initiatives.
Kirchick’s thoughtful and provocative cover story examines the debate by uncovering the boycott organizers’ goals and looking at what the future holds for the LGBT community and its new love-hate relationship with the DNC.
“We’re just saying we’re going to take you [the Democratic Party] down with us. We’re going to blow this up and it’s going to hurt you too.” — AmericaBlog editor John Aravosis
