Julianne Moore On Her Tom Ford Crush and Bitch Slapping Madonna

Julianne-moore_advocateThe Advocate’s intrepid reporter Brandon Voss is at it again. This time he sits down with Julianne Moore as she looks back on bitch-slapping Madonna, lesbian mullets, and her most memorable gay pride parade ever.

The A Single Man co-star also opened up about the controversy around the “de-gaying” of the film’s marketing campaign and a little crush – or lust- she had on the director, Tom Ford.

Advocate: I’d argue you first got the gay audience’s attention in 1993 when you bitch slapped Madonna in Body of Evidence.
Julianne Moore: That’s really funny. It was a fake slap. I just have memories of being very lonely on that movie. No one talked to me, and Madonna was kind of doing her own thing, so I spent a lot of time by myself. She was at the New York premiere of A Single Man, but I didn’t see her.

ADV: I’m guessing you’re not mad about A Single Man’s “de-gayed” marketing campaign because at least you’re more prominently featured in the one-sheets.
JM: [Laughs] Well, it was worse before when Colin Firth and I looked like we were in bed together. It was ridiculous, and Tom was furious. He said, “It looks like a romantic comedy!” He wanted to make it very clear that this was a movie about a gay man and his life, his day, his boyfriend — not about his relationship to a woman. I’m still in the poster, but at least now I’m in the back.

ADV: Have you ever fallen for a gay man?
JM: And wanted to have sex with him? Just Tom Ford. [Laughs] When I was a freshman in college in 1979, there was this hot gay guy that I used to make out with in the hallways of the dorm. My idea about gay was very foggy at the time. He was the first out gay person I’d ever met and he was kissing me, so I didn’t know what was happening.

ADV: Any hot action between you and Annette Bening [in her new film The Kids Are All Right]?
JM: [Laughs] Well, yeah, there’s some stuff, I guess. You’ll have to wait and see.
