TIM BURTON'S CONCEPT OF ALICE IN WONDERLAND
Here's your first look at some of the concept art for Tim Burton's take on Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, a Disney film due in theaters March 5, 2010. As you can see, the artwork has Burton's dark and twisted style infused throughout.
Johnny Depp (top left) with his yellow-tinted, enlarged eyes is "Off his rocker" as the Mad Hatter. Says producer Richard Zanuck, "He is so much fun and so nutty, I can't imagine anyone else doing it." Helena Bonham Carter (top middle) with her digitally enhanced and enlarged head screams "Off with their heads" as the Red Queen. And Anne Hathaway is The White Queen, "beautiful but over the top. She doesn't walk. She floats. She's very eccentric," Zanuck says.
Above, Alice, played by 19-year-old Aussie actress Mia Wasikowska (HBO's In Treatment), greets Wonderland's talking roses at the entrance to the forest of giant mushrooms. "There is something real, honest and sincere about her," Zanuck says. "She's not a typical Hollywood starlet."
Topiaries in the shape of a giraffe, a dodo and other creatures fill the garden (below left) where the critter checks his timepiece, and Alice takes in the view, while egg-shaped Tweedledee and Tweedledum, played by British comic Matt Lucas (Little Britain) greet Alice before taking her to meet the Mad Hatter (below right).
