KEN HUNT BUILDS MUSCLES OF STEEL

KensteelKen Hunt, Ethan Says reader, fitness expert and owner of New York’s STEEL GYM (named "#1 Gym in New York" two years in a row by the American Fitness Institute for "cost, cleanliness, equipment and service,"), has just released "8 Tips To Improving Your Training," a list of simple, no-nonsense rules to help you train better - and smarter. Recognizing the many common mistakes people make at the gym that stop their progress, Ken has graciously sent over these tips to help you improve your workout:

1. Do strength training before cardio workout. When you do cardio before strength training, you’re using up energy you would have used for resistance training. By the time you’re done with cardio, your body won’t have the right kind of energy left for resistance training.

2. If you’re only doing cardio, do it first thing in the morning. In the morning, before you do anything else, your body hasn’t stored any carbohydrates to use for energy. . Do cardio when you wake up and you’ll burn that fat before breakfast.

3. Know proper techniques. Each exercise has strict rules and structured. And its not true that the more weight you lift, the more muscles you’ll develop. In fact, you may be using the wrong muscles for the wrong job. Understand the rules of your workout. You’ll reach your goals faster without damaging your body in the long-term.

4. To build muscle, do high reps with a challenging weight. To build big, impressive muscles, do everything.  Focusing on achieving high numbers of repetitions at a weight that’s going to push you.  Focus on increasing your endurance because you’ll be able to workout longer and gain the muscles you want.

5. Don’t work out the same muscles two days in a row. After strength training, give your muscles at least 48 hours to recover before exercising those muscles again.  Recovery is just as important as the workout itself. If you’re still sore after 48 hours, it’s crucial to wait until you’re fully recovered.

6. Different forms of cardio achieve different goals.  If cardio is your warm-up before strength training, do at least eight to ten minutes .  If you’re doing cardio simply to keep fit, then you’ll want to challenge your heart. Don’t go at a steady pace. Play around with the incline and speed on your treadmill. This way, your heart will be put through its paces.

7. Diet (and the right attitude) makes your workout more effective. If you’re serious about your workout, you’ll be serious about your diet as well.  Try not to justify a donut with a mile on the treadmill too often.

8. The workout doesn’t end when you meet your goal . Even when you’ve achieved your weight-loss or muscle-building goals, you’re not done working out.  This is where the actual work begins—maintenance. And through it all, you must stay disciplined, focused and committed to exercise as a lifestyle.

This guy is great! I've been visiting Steel Gym for the past year and I think it is hands-down the best gym in the city absolutely.

This is a terrific place to train. Its a no-nonsense, very well run gym that gives you everything you need. Best is their policy for trainers. You can bring your own trainer--THEY DON'T SELL TRAINING PACKAGES--so you can work with your own trainer and not spend a friggin fortune.

And they have a ton of equipment that I have NEVER seen in any other gym. Check this place out!

I'm glad that Ken's tips follow what I've always thought about my workouts. I think more people need to learn the right way to work out.

This guy has the right approach. What a refreshing look at training. Does he have any more articles or books. I have heard about the gym and now I want to go. Can we see more of him?

Great Great Gym--I switched over from David Barton about 6 months ago. Glad I did. Great price for membership--Best equipment in the city ( that I have seen) if you are serious. Check out www.steelgym.com for more articles by Ken---the guy knows what he is talking about.

best wishes - darren

Definately, hands down the best gym to workout in. Steel is a low key no nonsense gym. The staff is friendly and accomidating. I've been working out there for about 5 months now and have seen a major improvement in myself. I highly recommend it to anyone in the area. Keep up the great work guys.
