CHACE CRAWFORD IS THE VMAN
Gossip Girl's hottie Chace Crawford dons the cover of VMAN Issue 12, the magazine's first-ever winter issue. In a series of images by renowned photographer Mario Testino, Crawford joins an impressive list of other cover stars including Tom Brady, David Beckham, Aston Kutcher, and Orland Bloom.
“Chace embodies the kind of emerging star VMAN strives to celebrate,” said VMAN editor Jesse Ashlock. “As Mario Testino’s images show, he’s classic, yet completely of this moment, and he’s ambitious without taking himself too seriously.”
VMAN Issue 12 Winter 2008, which also includes Mario Testino’s 50-page portfolio devoted to the most extreme forms of modern masculinity, is on stands this week with a cover price of $5.50. (CLICK HERE FOR HIGHLIGHTS)
“I never planned on being an actor. It sort of fell into my lap rather quickly,” Crawford explains, revealing that soon after leaving college to try his hand at acting, he landed a role in the 2006 supernatural thriller The Covenant, then struck gold a few months later when he was cast as Nate Archibald in Gossip Girl. Crawford’s quick ascent to fame has not come without consequences. Regarding the constant media attention and gossip about his personal life, Crawford states, "I let it roll off my back. There’s a lot of speculation with no reality to it, complete fabrications about my private life. It’s just comical.” In a discussion of Gossip Girl’s popularity with the adult world, the handsome star says, “I’ll be out on the golf course, and some guy will come up to me, sort of sheepishly, and be like, ‘Hey, my wife really loves the show. And I’m like, ‘C’mon man, you love the show.’”
Mario Testino set the tone for the issue with a revealing look inside his extreme world. “Masculinity has come to be determined less by a man’s exterior than by his kindness, his fairness, his taste, his behavior,” Testino explains. “Now, you can look like one thing and be completely the opposite. I’m quite fascinated by this, so I decided to do a study of the extremes of masculine identity today.” After personally researching and selecting his subjects, Testino photographed thirteen extreme male archetypes, including Extreme Sun (the beach bum), Extreme ink (tattooed men), and Extreme Macho (bearded men).
Following Testino’s lead, the rest of the winter VMAN looks at a wide array of extremes, including the extreme obsession of the young vampires who star in the eagerly anticipated new film Twilight, the extreme moves of the Miami Dolphins cheerleaders, and the extreme hobbies of Norway’s rugged outdoorsmen. Others featured in the issue include Tristan Wilds, part of the cast of the new 90210; Toby Kebbel, star of Guy Ritchie’s RocknRolla; controversial Deerhunter frontman Bradford Cox; party-loving rock star Andrew W.K.; legendary photographer William Eggleston; and Max Lugavere and Jason Silva, cohosts of the acclaimed new cable network Current TV. As usual, VMAN’s new issue features some of the best photographers and stylists working today, including not only Testino, but also Beat Bolliger, Richard Burbridge, Doug Inglish, Roe Ethridge, and more.
